Hawke is and remains one of my favorite actors and Phoenix met his untimely demise in 1993 – no telling what roles he could have tackled. Looking at this movie in particular, it provided a breakthrough for two talented actors: Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix. ![]() But it just didn’t “do it” for me like some other movies I’d seen at the time. ![]() I’m a fan of Kurt Russell and John Carpenter. That film, like Explorers, was made in the mid 80’s. I recently watched Big Trouble in Little China for the first time. The point being, we have emotional attachments to movies (or songs, books, television shows, etc.). It could be who you were with, what was going on in your life or a vast variety of other things. But, I think, more movies leave an impression on us when it comes to when we saw them. It’s something we’ve not seen before and therefore leaves a lasting impression on the viewer. The first, and most obvious, is that it’s good. We also host a number of student teachers each year in our TK-6 classrooms and several university teaching methodology classes are taught on campus with the University students providing additional instructional and intervention support to our Earl students.There are films that stay with us for different reasons. We also have a close working relationship with our local University, California State University, Stanislaus, we have over 100 tutors, mentors, and observers come into our classrooms to provide support. We love to use “Explorer Vision” to recognize our children that are "caught doing something good". We have a closed circuit television program that broadcasts to every classroom each morning with the daily bulletin, we call this “Explorer Vision”. We are proud to recognize and celebrate students' academic and social accomplishments on a regular basis at our monthly Excellent Explorer Assemblies which highlight students for a variety of personal strengths based on the character traits found in our Character Counts Program such as respect and responsibility. ![]() We have a very diverse student population with 14 different languages spoken by our students and their families. Earl is designed to be a community-oriented campus where families enjoy recreational activities after school hours and on the weekends. Earl, a former Trustee of the Turlock Joint Elementary School Board, who died in 1985. ![]()
